PUTRAJAYA, April 30, 2026 — Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reached out to Dato’ Dr Sani Araby, Director General of the Sumud Nusantara Command Centre (SNCC), for the latest updates on the Israeli interception and detention of activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla.
In a strongly worded statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) today, Anwar condemned Israel’s actions, describing them as “cowardly and mad” by the Zionist regime. He said the activists were detained in international waters purely to stop a humanitarian mission aimed at delivering aid to the people of Gaza, who are suffering due to the prolonged conflict.
“I have contacted Dato’ Dr Sani Araby, Director General of the Sumud Nusantara Control Centre, regarding the latest developments on the detention of Global Sumud Flotilla activists,” Anwar wrote.
He added that the MADANI Government will not remain silent and is working closely with friendly nations to secure the immediate release of all those detained.
“To the families of the activists, I convey my full solidarity and strength,” Anwar said. He described the incident as a test of humanity’s conscience and offered prayers for the detainees’ safety, protection from harm, and strength to endure the ordeal.
Reports indicate that approximately 10 Malaysians are among around 175 to 211 activists detained. Israeli forces intercepted about 22 vessels of the 58-strong flotilla in international waters near the Greek island of Crete — more than 1,000 km from Gaza — late on April 29 and early April 30. The flotilla, part of the Spring 2026 mission, was carrying humanitarian aid and medical supplies in an effort to break Israel’s blockade on Gaza.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is an international civilian-led initiative involving participants from dozens of countries. Malaysia has been actively involved through the Sumud Nusantara coalition, with Anwar Ibrahim serving as its patron. The government had previously pledged full support for the mission.
The incident has drawn international attention, with human rights groups like Amnesty International raising concerns over the arbitrary detention of activists and the interception occurring in international waters.
Anwar’s statement comes as Malaysia continues its longstanding solidarity with the Palestinian cause, positioning the MADANI administration as a vocal advocate for humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
The video accompanying Anwar’s post shows him speaking on the phone and addressing the nation directly about the issue.
Life News Agency will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on the detainees’ situation and Malaysia’s diplomatic efforts.
