NILAI, April 26, 2026 – Terengganu Chief Minister Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has congratulated national cycling icon Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang for his spectacular victory in the men’s keirin event at the 2026 UCI Track Cycling World Cup here.
In a post on X yesterday, Dr. Samsuri shared dramatic footage of the final moments and wrote: “Detik-detik kemenangan Dato’ Jijoe semalam yang membanggakan kita semua warga Malaysia dan khususnya rakyat Terengganu. Tahniah The Pocket Rocketman.”
The 38-year-old Terengganu-born rider, affectionately known as Dato’ Jijoe or the Pocket Rocketman, produced a stunning home-soil performance at the National Velodrome on April 25, powering past reigning world champion Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands to claim gold. Trinidad and Tobago’s Nicholas Paul took bronze.
Azizulhasni started from fifth position behind the derny but unleashed a powerful late surge that sent the packed Malaysian crowd into rapturous celebration. The win marks his second keirin gold of the 2026 World Cup season after his dramatic triumph in Perth, Australia, in March.
A two-time Olympic medallist (silver in Tokyo 2020 and bronze in Rio 2016) and 2017 UCI World Champion in the keirin, Azizulhasni continues to defy age and expectations. He is widely regarded as Malaysia’s most successful track cyclist, with a glittering record that includes multiple Asian Games and Asian Championship titles.
The victory has sparked national pride, especially in Terengganu, where Azizulhasni hails from Dungun. Sports fans and officials have flooded social media with messages of congratulations, calling the win a fitting reward for the veteran’s decades of dedication to the sport.
The three-day UCI Track World Cup in Nilai concludes today, with Malaysia hoping for more strong performances on home soil.
