WASHINGTON D.C July 6, 2026 – U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Russia is closer to reaching an agreement with Ukraine to end the war, following what he described as a “good call” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The remarks come after a nearly 90-minute phone conversation between the two leaders over the weekend. According to Kremlin officials, Trump offered to help find a solution to the ongoing conflict during the call, which took place on July 4.
Trump also held a separate call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the situation.
Speaking to reporters, Trump emphasized optimism about progress:
“I think we’re getting much closer than people realize. And President Putin wants it to end. I will tell you that very strongly and a good call… President [Zelenskyy] actually wants it to end now. And we’re going to be going to NATO and we’re going to be talking about it and I think we’re going to get it ended.”
The comments come as the Russia-Ukraine war enters its fifth year, with recent Russian strikes on Kyiv and continued fighting in eastern Ukraine.
Trump is expected to discuss the conflict further during next week’s NATO summit in Turkey, where he plans to attend.
No specific details about the potential agreement — such as territorial concessions, security guarantees, or ceasefire terms — were released. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Putin and Trump agreed their contacts would continue “in the near future.”
The announcement has drawn a range of reactions online and among analysts. Supporters of the president view it as a positive step toward ending the bloodshed, while critics and Ukrainian officials have expressed caution, noting that similar optimistic statements in the past have not led to immediate breakthroughs.
The White House has not yet provided additional details on the substance of the calls. Both sides continue to emphasize their desire for a political-diplomatic resolution while military operations persist on the ground.
Further updates are expected as Trump prepares for the NATO meetings.
