WASHINGTON, D.C. June 14, 2026 – In unusually blunt and colorful language, U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, accusing him of poor timing and lacking judgment after Israel carried out airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut.
The strikes came just as the United States and Iran were on the verge of signing a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the ongoing Middle East conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and addressing Iran’s nuclear program.
Trump told Axios he was “so pissed off” when informed of the Israeli action, which occurred roughly an hour before the expected signing. He said he directly confronted Netanyahu, asking, “Why did Bibi have to do a f***ing attack?” and telling him, “He has no f***ing judgment whatsoever.”
“I am very unhappy,” Trump added, according to reports circulating on social media and confirmed by major outlets.
Israel justified the strikes as a response to Hezbollah firing projectiles into northern Israel, which caused no casualties. Netanyahu’s office stated that Israel “will not tolerate firing into its territory.” Lebanese authorities reported at least three people killed and others wounded in the southern suburbs of Beirut (Dahiyeh area).
Despite the friction, Trump emphasized that the deal with Iran is still moving forward, though delayed by a few hours. He posted a call for restraint: “We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region… Let’s not blow it!” He urged both Israel and Hezbollah to stand down.
The incident highlights longstanding tensions between Trump and Netanyahu over the pace and scope of military operations in Lebanon amid broader U.S.-led diplomatic efforts. Trump has repeatedly pressed Israel to avoid actions that could derail talks with Tehran, while Netanyahu has prioritized security against Hezbollah threats.
Israeli officials were reportedly “stunned” by the public rebuke, describing it as a “resounding slap in the face.” Iran has vowed a strong response to the Beirut strike but has also signaled that negotiations could continue.
Trump has floated ideas such as an Israeli withdrawal from parts of southern Lebanon as part of a broader understanding.
This episode comes amid a volatile period in the region, with the U.S. attempting to balance its strong alliance with Israel against the goal of de-escalating conflict with Iran.
As of Sunday evening, the memorandum signing was still expected later in the day, according to multiple reports.
