KUALA LUMPUR June 15, 2026 — Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim today officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for permanent replacement housing for residents of Rumah Panjang Bukit Kiara, marking a historic resolution to a long-standing issue affecting urban poor families in the capital.
The project addresses a 44-year saga for approximately 98 families who were relocated to temporary longhouse accommodations in 1982 with promises of permanent homes that were never fulfilled—until now. Residents will each receive two free units in the new development, with construction prioritised so they can move directly into the completed homes without interim relocation.
Speaking at the event, Anwar described the occasion as deeply meaningful and a testament to the MADANI administration’s commitment to justice, compassion, and upholding the dignity of the people.
“This is not only joyful for the residents of Rumah Panjang Bukit Kiara, but also proof that a MADANI-centred administration always prioritises justice, compassion, and the dignity of the rakyat,” he said.
Anwar emphasised that the government carefully reviewed legal and institutional processes before proceeding, while ensuring the rights and welfare of those in need are protected regardless of race, religion, or background. He highlighted inclusive development as essential, stating that true national progress leaves no one behind.
As part of the government’s support, Anwar announced an RM1 million grant to subsidise maintenance costs for the new homes over three years, to be managed by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL). This aims to ease the financial burden on residents after they move in.
Local leaders, including Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, also attended and praised the resolution, crediting the Prime Minister’s personal commitment for advancing the project after it spanned multiple administrations.
The development, spanning 5.76 acres, is expected to provide modern, dignified housing and serve as a model for people-centred governance addressing urban poverty.
Photos from the ceremony show Anwar inspecting architectural models of the high-rise blocks, reviewing project documents with officials including Yeoh, and engaging warmly with local children at the site.
The initiative underscores the MADANI government’s focus on uplifting marginalised communities and delivering on long-delayed promises.
