PUTRAJAYA, June 15, 2026 — Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed strong support for the recent understanding between the United States and Iran aimed at ending hostilities, highlighting the upcoming signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) as a positive step toward regional stability.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Anwar said: “I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran towards ending hostilities, and the announcement that a memorandum of understanding will be signed in the coming days. I commend the mediation efforts that brought the parties to this point, especially those undertaken by Pakistan.”
The Prime Minister emphasized the urgent need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, describing it as “a critical artery for global energy security and international trade.” He warned that prolonged disruption would harm everyone involved.
Anwar further urged all parties to act in good faith and move swiftly to convert the understanding into a durable peace settlement. “At this delicate moment, all parties and external actors must refrain from any action that could derail diplomacy and renew hostilities,” he stated. Malaysia stands ready to support efforts toward a just and lasting peace and called on the international community to sustain the momentum.
The development follows months of tensions that disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz — a vital chokepoint carrying about 20% of the world’s oil and LNG — and escalated global energy prices. Reports indicate the prospective MoU includes a 60-day ceasefire extension, reopening of the strait without tolls, sanctions relief for Iran, and steps toward addressing its nuclear program, with broader negotiations to follow.
Pakistan has played a key mediating role in recent weeks, with both Washington and Tehran acknowledging its contributions. Malaysian officials have previously welcomed Islamabad’s offer to host talks.
The statement comes as US President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced progress on ending military operations. Markets are expected to react positively to the potential restoration of oil flows and reduced geopolitical risk.
Malaysia, as a major trading nation with strong ties across the Middle East and beyond, has consistently advocated for diplomacy in the conflict. Anwar’s remarks position the country as a supportive voice for de-escalation and multilateral peace efforts.
Further details on the MoU signing, reportedly anticipated around June 19, are awaited from the involved parties.
