KOTA BHARU April 18, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured the public that the majority of Malaysians remain protected from recent diesel price increases thanks to the government’s targeted subsidy mechanism.
“85% rakyat masih guna diesel bersubsidi, tidak terkesan dengan kenaikan harga diesel,” Anwar said during an event today.
The Prime Minister made the statement after officiating the new terminal at Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He was addressing growing public concerns over rising diesel prices amid the global energy crisis triggered by conflicts in West Asia and other geopolitical tensions.
Anwar explained that only 15% of the population purchase diesel at market prices and are therefore affected by fluctuations, while the remaining 85% continue to enjoy subsidised rates.
The government’s diesel subsidy rationalisation programme, rolled out in phases since 2024, has already delivered significant savings of approximately RM5 billion. Subsidies are now more focused on critical sectors including public transport operators, fishermen, farmers, and other essential users to ensure fairness and fiscal sustainability.
Despite global oil price volatility, Anwar stressed that the targeted subsidy approach has successfully shielded most citizens from the full impact of market-driven increases while allowing the government to redirect savings toward development and welfare programmes.
The statement comes as part of the broader Malaysia MADANI agenda to reform subsidies without burdening the rakyat. The government continues to monitor global oil trends and stands ready to provide additional support where needed.
