SAN DIEGO, July 27 (Reuters) – Marvel fans will meet a more mature and self-assured Shang-Chi in the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, actor Simu Liu said during interviews at San Diego Comic-Con.
Liu, who reprises his role as the martial-arts master and wielder of the Ten Rings, told reporters the character has evolved considerably since audiences last saw him in the 2021 solo film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
“He’s matured pretty considerably since the end of his movie, where he was kind of given these rings by his father for the very first time and just kind of coming into his own,” Liu said. “Now I think he’s in a place where he’s a lot more confident and self-assured. He’s become quite familiar with the rings and he knows when to use their full power and when to maybe peel back.”
The actor noted that Shang-Chi still feels like “a bit of a new kid” joining the larger group of heroes, but he is no longer the fish-out-of-water figure from his origin story. Liu also teased that a clash with Channing Tatum’s Gambit is unlikely to end in true enmity.
“I don’t think he’s trying to kill Gambit, for example. Those two seem like they’re probably going to be friends more than anything else.
”Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, is scheduled for theatrical release on Dec. 18, 2026. Liu appeared on the massive Marvel Studios panel in Hall H on July 25 and spoke to media on the carpet afterward.
