PETALING JAYA, 30 April 2026 – The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) has launched MyIPO NEXTGEN, a comprehensive five-year strategic plan (2025–2030) aimed at transforming intellectual property (IP) from a legal protection tool into a key driver of national economic growth.
The initiative was announced today as part of the National Intellectual Property Day 2026 (HHIN2026) celebrations, held from 28 to 30 April. This year’s theme, “IP & Sukan: Dari Idea ke Podium” (IP & Sports: From Idea to Podium), underscores the critical role of IP in powering innovation within the sports industry.
In his media statement, Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the programme strengthens public awareness of IP’s importance in fostering innovation and creativity while aligning with the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) and the MADANI economy agenda.
“World Intellectual Property Day, celebrated annually on 26 April, highlights the role of IP in driving innovation and creativity. Through HHIN2026, MyIPO organised various awareness activities to deepen public understanding of IP,” the minister stated.
He noted that between 2024 and 2025, Malaysia recorded 15,350 patent applications and 115,852 trademark applications. Of these, 118 patents were sports-related, while 1,812 trademarks covered sports products and services, with 28.5% coming from local applicants.
During the National Intellectual Property Awards 2026 (AHIN2026) held today, 10 award categories were presented, including six main awards for outstanding IP management, patents, industrial designs, trademarks, copyrights, and school students. Three special awards recognised government agencies, commercial achievements, and top IP agents. A new Anugerah Inspirasi MADANI was also introduced to honour athletes, sports teams, and organisations that successfully leverage IP for sports development.
MyIPO NEXTGEN focuses on three core pillars:
– Modernisation of legislation
– Digitisation of services
– Commercialisation of intellectual property**
The plan aims to position IP as a strategic economic asset, supporting technological sovereignty and contributing to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth under the MADANI framework.
To strengthen the commercialisation ecosystem, MyIPO will develop a pool of certified IP valuers, expand advocacy for IP-based financing among micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and enhance the IP Academy with internationally benchmarked courses in IP management and commercialisation.
The minister emphasised that these efforts will help local innovators and businesses turn ideas into commercially viable products, particularly in high-potential sectors such as sports technology.
