RAWALPINDI, Aug 23, 2026 — Malaysian Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail met Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on Friday, discussing regional security, diplomatic approaches to conflict, and bilateral cooperation.
According to a statement from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) and reports from the Associated Press of Pakistan, the meeting focused on regional security dynamics and matters of mutual interest. Both sides reaffirmed the longstanding ties between Pakistan and Malaysia and expressed commitment to expanding defence and strategic engagement.
In a post on X on Sunday, Saifuddin elaborated on the discussions. He noted Pakistan’s significant role in facilitating negotiations between the United States and Iran to address the crisis related to the Strait of Hormuz. Field Marshal Munir shared Pakistan’s experience in mediating those peace talks, while the Malaysian minister recounted Malaysia’s role in facilitating discussions between Thailand and Cambodia that led to a ceasefire agreement.
“The experiences of both countries prove that, despite facing different challenges, diplomacy, dialogue and confidence-building remain the most effective foundations for easing tensions and opening the path to peaceful solutions,” Saifuddin wrote. He added that Malaysia would continue supporting diplomatic approaches and conflict resolution through negotiations, in line with its commitment to regional and international peace, stability and prosperity.
The meeting formed part of Saifuddin’s official working visit to Pakistan, which also included talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the signing of an International Transfer of Prisoners treaty, and engagements on security, narcotics control, digital identity systems and other areas of cooperation.
Pakistan has played a prominent mediating role in recent US-Iran contacts concerning the Strait of Hormuz, including efforts around an earlier memorandum of understanding aimed at de-escalation and free passage through the strategic waterway.
