CANBERRA April 20, 2026 – Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has directly linked the escalating conflict in the Middle East to rising prices at home, while insisting the Australian government’s priority remains helping families with the cost of living.
In a video statement posted on X today, Mr Albanese said: “Conflict in the Middle East is pushing up prices at home, but our focus is on helping Australians with the cost of living.”
Speaking to camera, the Prime Minister stressed that “no country is immune from the impact of this conflict, even though it’s happening on the other side of the world.” He noted the conflict’s “massive impact on the global economy” and on people in the region, adding that Australia wants to see a resolution.
Mr Albanese highlighted action already taken by the Labor government, including the fuel excise cut that has reduced petrol and diesel prices by 32 cents per litre. “We will continue to make sure – as Labor governments always will – to be concerned about cost of living, to particularly provide protection for the most vulnerable while keeping the economy strong,” he said.
The remarks come as global oil supply disruptions linked to the Iran-related conflict have contributed to higher fuel costs across Australia. The Prime Minister’s post has drawn strong reactions online, with some users criticising the government’s broader economic policies and others supporting the focus on relief measures.
