PUTRAJAYA April 20, 2026 — Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a telephone conversation today with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to discuss the escalating West Asia conflict and its impact on global energy supplies and supply chains, including effects on the ASEAN region.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Anwar said the two leaders welcomed the temporary ceasefire involving the United States, Iran, Israel and Lebanon, while stressing the urgent need for all parties to support a more comprehensive and lasting resolution to the conflict.
“Malaysia supports the ongoing diplomatic efforts being undertaken, including Pakistan’s role in opening space for dialogue,” Anwar said. He also reiterated the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and security in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law.
The discussion also focused on energy security. The leaders exchanged views on strengthening the resilience of power grids and addressing supply-demand imbalances. They agreed to accelerate the implementation of the ASEAN Power Grid as a strategic regional measure to enhance energy security.
Anwar expressed confidence that through close cooperation and a people-centric approach, Malaysia and ASEAN will continue to remain resilient amid global uncertainties.
“Insya-Allah, through close cooperation and a people-centric approach, we will ensure Malaysia and ASEAN remain resilient in facing this global uncertainty,” he added.
