TEHRAN July 6, 2026 — Millions of Iranians filled the streets of the capital today to mourn Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a U.S.-Israeli attack on February 28.
The large-scale funeral procession featured mourners waving flags, carrying portraits of the late leader, and taking part in traditional mourning rituals, including chanting and beating their chests. The atmosphere reflected both grief and national solidarity following Khamenei’s death at age 86.
Funeral ceremonies officially began on July 3 and have drawn foreign leaders along with delegations from across the region. Public processions are continuing and are scheduled to run through July 9, when Khamenei is expected to be buried.
Khamenei’s assassination in the February 28 strike triggered weeks of conflict and sharply escalated regional tensions. Today’s massive turnout in Tehran underscores the scale of the national mourning period for Iran’s long-serving Supreme Leader.
The events are being widely covered by international media as one of the largest public gatherings in recent Iranian history.
