KUALA LUMPUR, May 3, 2026 (Life News Agency) – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim today officiated the 60th anniversary celebration of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), describing the milestone as far more than an institutional anniversary but a powerful reflection of Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to balance meritocracy with social justice and equal opportunity.
Speaking at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), where a major five-day carnival is underway to mark the occasion, Anwar stressed that MARA’s six-decade journey embodies the nation’s choice to address structural inequalities while building a brighter, more inclusive future.
“Six decades of MARA should be seen not merely as the anniversary of an ordinary institution, but as a true reflection of the long journey of an idea, and how the country chooses to balance aspects of merit, justice, and social responsibility in building a brighter and more inclusive future,” he said.
In a detailed statement shared on X shortly after the event, Anwar acknowledged that debates on affirmative action policies remain intense and often polarised. He referenced American economist Thomas Sowell’s critique of “tyranny of merit” and the risks of creating dependency through such policies in the name of free competition. However, he cautioned that such views must not be adopted absolutely without considering objective realities on the ground.
Drawing from economist John Kenneth Galbraith, Anwar emphasised that social justice is not mere rhetoric but a structural necessity to prevent society from being trapped in cycles of marginalisation. He also invoked philosopher John Rawls’ concept of “justice as fairness,” questioning how equal competition can be demanded between students from elite urban schools and children in remote areas such as Kapit, Manik Urai, Hulu Kelantan or Hulu Pahang without first ensuring fair access and a level playing field.
“Without principled emphasis, meritocracy risks becoming a tool that legitimises inequality, far from being a factor that resolves it,” Anwar said. “Justice must be advanced not to deny merit but to correct long-standing gaps.”
He reaffirmed MARA’s continuing role as a key vehicle for empowerment under the Malaysia MADANI agenda, focusing on education, entrepreneurship and social mobility so that every citizen — regardless of background or geography — can rise with dignity and competitiveness.
Separately, Anwar instructed that proposed amendments to the Majlis Amanah Rakyat Act 1966 be finalised within three months. The revisions aim to strengthen governance and serve as a legal safeguard to ensure the Bumiputera empowerment agenda remains intact and is not subject to change with every shift in national or organisational leadership.
The carnival, running from May 1 to 5 at WTCKL and expected to attract over 100,000 visitors, features various programmes promoting the 3P agenda — participation, ownership and control — to further strengthen Bumiputera positions in education and entrepreneurship.
The event was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and MARA Chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
Established in 1966, MARA has been instrumental in advancing the economic and educational development of the Bumiputera community for six decades.
