ISLAMABAD February 28, 2026 – Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the dangerous escalation in the Middle East following today’s joint US-Israeli military strikes on Iran and Iran’s retaliatory attacks on targets in the Gulf region.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) this evening, PM Sharif announced that he had spoken by telephone with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, HRH Mohammed bin Salman.
“I spoke with my dear brother HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman this evening to express Pakistan’s strong condemnation of the dangerous regional escalation following the Israeli attack on Iran and subsequent attacks in the Gulf region,” the Prime Minister stated.
He added: “Pakistan stands in full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and our brotherly Gulf countries in this perilous time. We remain ready to play a constructive role for peace and pray that the blessings of Ramadan bring calm and stability to our region.”
The telephone conversation comes hours after reports of major US-Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military and leadership targets in Tehran and other cities. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on Israeli positions and US-linked facilities in Gulf Arab states, including the UAE (where one death was reported in Abu Dhabi), Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait, triggering explosions across the region.
Pakistan, which maintains close fraternal ties with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries while also enjoying longstanding relations with Iran, has consistently advocated for de-escalation, dialogue and unity in the Muslim world.
Analysts view PM Sharif’s outreach as a timely diplomatic move aimed at supporting key Gulf allies while positioning Pakistan as a potential bridge for peace efforts ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.
The Prime Minister’s Office is expected to issue a more detailed readout of the call shortly.
