Jorge Messi, the father of Argentine soccer icon Lionel Messi and his longtime agent and business manager, has died at the age of 68. He passed away early Saturday at a hospital in Rosario, Argentina, after a prolonged illness.
The Rosario-based club Newell’s Old Boys, where Lionel began his youth career, confirmed the death in a social media statement. The club described Jorge as “the pillar and the person who, with vision, rigor and affection, supported the career of the best player of all time, alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini.”
Jorge Messi had been receiving medical treatment in recent months. The family publicly acknowledged his health issues in mid-June during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating he was under close medical supervision. Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to the World Cup final, was visibly emotional after scoring in the tournament’s opening match and later said his tears were unrelated to soccer as he faced “difficult, complicated days.”
A former chemical technician and steelworker, Jorge Messi played a central role in his son’s rise. He recognized Lionel’s talent early, helped arrange his move to Barcelona’s La Masia academy at age 13, and served for years as his primary agent and negotiator. He is survived by his wife Celia and their four children: Rodrigo, Matías, Lionel, and María Sol.
The Argentine Football Association announced a minute’s silence would be observed at all matches over the weekend. CONMEBOL and other football bodies also issued statements of condolence. Lionel Messi, currently with Inter Miami, is expected to travel to Rosario for a private family farewell.
