PETALING JAYA, May 20 2026 — Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed appreciation to all coalition partners in the MADANI Unity Government for their renewed commitment to serve until the end of the current parliamentary term.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who also serves as the Unity Government’s spokesman, conveyed the Prime Minister’s thanks during his weekly press conference today. He said the reaffirmation came during Cabinet discussions, following an earlier call by Anwar.
“All component parties have reiterated their support to serve the full term. This commitment was acknowledged again in today’s Cabinet meeting,” Fahmi said.
The statement addresses ongoing speculation about a possible early general election (GE16). Fahmi stressed that the unity among parties — including Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) — ensures political stability, allowing the government to focus on economic recovery, public welfare, and fiscal prudence.
In the video statement shared by Bernama, Fahmi highlighted the strong support from East Malaysian partners GPS and GRS, noting that this solidarity helps the government tackle national priorities without distraction.
Anwar had previously raised the matter, and coalition leaders responded positively, reinforcing their dedication to the MADANI administration’s goals. Fahmi added that this stable environment enables more targeted spending, including cost-conscious approaches to national events, while protecting frontline services in health, education, and security.
The Unity Government, formed after the 15th General Election, continues to hold a strong majority in Parliament. No immediate plans for an early election have been indicated by the Prime Minister.
Fahmi also touched on other Cabinet matters, including preparations for the next Dewan Rakyat sitting starting June 22 and ongoing expenditure rationalisation efforts that have reached about 50% of the target.
