WASHINGTON, Aug. 6, 2026 — U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday he believes the war with Iran will end “pretty soon,” expressing doubt that Tehran can sustain the conflict much longer, while indicating that a deal to fully reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz could come in the near future.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump stated: “I think it’s going to end pretty soon.” He added that he does not think Iran “can go much longer.”
On the status of the Strait of Hormuz — a critical waterway for global energy supplies currently subject to a U.S. Navy-led blockade — Trump said negotiations were underway. “I’m involved in the negotiation. I think we’re doing fine. It could be soon,” he remarked.
He described the waterway as “sort of open right now,” noting U.S. control via the blockade. Trump cautioned about lingering risks, saying Iranian forces “can always shoot something… or drop a mine,” which could deter commercial shipping due to the high value of vessels involved. “But I think we’re doing very well,” he added.
The comments come amid ongoing tensions in the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict, which has seen military exchanges targeting Iranian Revolutionary Guard sites and U.S. facilities in the Gulf region. An earlier memorandum of understanding signed in June had aimed at de-escalation but stalled over issues including security guarantees and freedom of navigation through the strait.
Trump previously threatened intensified strikes on Iranian energy facilities, bridges, and power plants but later paused them after Iran agreed to resume talks. He also dismissed concerns about U.S. munitions stockpiles, stating the military is “in very, very good shape” with supplies available worldwide.
