ISTANBUL, November 4, 2026 – Liverpool teenager Trey Nyoni scored his first professional goal in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, but his landmark moment ended in disappointment as Fenerbahce came from behind twice to win 3-2 in Istanbul.
The Premier League celebrated the 19-year-old’s strike on its official X account, saying Nyoni “scored his first professional goal in @LFC’s Champions League fixture against Fenerbahce”.
A breakthrough moment
Nyoni, who kept his place in a side showing five changes from the weekend defeat to Arsenal, put Liverpool ahead in the 25th minute. A deep ball from Dominik Szoboszlai aimed at Virgil van Dijk was cleared only as far as the edge of the area, and the young midfielder ran on to it and struck a deflected shot past Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson.
Liverpool’s official website described it as his first senior professional goal, another chapter in what Sky Sports called his breakthrough season.
Fenerbahce fight back
The lead lasted just four minutes. Mason Greenwood’s free-kick deflected off Jeremy Jacquet and past Alisson in the 29th minute, and the sides went in level at 1-1 at half-time.
Head coach Andoni Iraola, who had rested several big names including Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, sent on Isak, Wirtz and Cody Gakpo in search of a winner. Isak restored the lead in the 69th minute with a header from Gakpo’s cross with his first touch after coming on.
Once again, however, Liverpool held the lead for only four minutes. A mix-up between Gakpo and Alisson allowed Archie Brown to tap in an equaliser in the 73rd minute, and Vedat Muriqi headed the hosts in front in the 79th minute.
BBC Sport noted that all three Fenerbahce goals came from set-pieces, and that it was the latest Liverpool had ever gone ahead in a major European match and then lost.
Kuyt’s night against his old club
The match carried extra meaning for Fenerbahce’s interim head coach, former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt, whose side were facing his old club. The Premier League had highlighted the occasion before kick-off.
The result gave Fenerbahce their first Champions League win of the season and, according to Daily Sabah, their first win in the competition since April 2, 2008, when they beat Chelsea in the quarter-finals. They moved on to five points from four league-phase matches.
What it means for Liverpool
The defeat ended Liverpool’s perfect start in this season’s Champions League, with the Reds dropping points for the first time halfway through their eight league-phase matches.
Iraola was left to lament what Sky Sports reported he called “cheap” and “messy” goals, as his side were punished for poor defending at set-pieces.
For Nyoni, though, the night still brought a personal milestone that he will remember, and one that adds to growing expectations around one of the club’s brightest young players.
The loss came three days after Liverpool’s 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal, leaving Iraola’s side looking to respond to back-to-back defeats in all competitions.
The final score and scorers were confirmed by Liverpool’s official website, BBC Sport, Sky Sports and TNT Sports.
