LEIPZIG, November 4, 2026 – Erling Haaland scored the winner 12 minutes from time as Manchester City beat RB Leipzig 3-2 in a back-and-forth UEFA Champions League league-phase match at the Red Bull Arena on Wednesday night.
The Premier League highlighted the result on its official X account, saying the Manchester City striker “scored the winner in a thrilling 3-2 win away at RB Leipzig in the Champions League”, and describing Haaland as “inevitable”.
City twice led and were twice pegged back before their captain settled a matchday-four contest that ebbed and flowed from start to finish.
An own goal breaks the deadlock
Leipzig looked the more dangerous side in the opening spell, with Antonio Nusa forcing a save from Gianluigi Donnarumma and Christoph Baumgartner curling a shot narrowly wide. City held most of the ball but struggled to create clear chances.
The visitors went ahead against the run of play in the 37th minute, when Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba turned a low cross from Nico O’Reilly into his own net. City took that 1-0 lead into half-time.
Leipzig hit back twice
The home side came out strongly after the break and levelled in the 49th minute through Ridle Baku, who squeezed a shot in from a tight angle on the right after an assist from Brajan Gruda.
City restored their lead in the 58th minute when Enzo Fernández headed in a cross from Iliman Ndiaye. The advantage lasted only three minutes. Substitute Christopher Nkunku set up Nusa, who drove a low finish into the bottom corner to make it 2-2 in the 61st minute.
Haaland has the final word
With the game opening up, Haaland slid in to meet a low cross from Elliot Anderson in the 78th minute to put City back in front. According to BBC Sport and Sky Sports, the goal was his 13th in nine appearances against Leipzig.
The closing stages were frantic. Leipzig’s David Raum struck the crossbar with a free-kick and City’s Rayan Cherki also hit the woodwork, while a late Gruda finish for the home side was ruled out for offside.
Speaking to City’s official channels after the match, Ndiaye said he was delighted to have provided an assist in what the club described as a pulsating victory.
What it means
The win returned City to winning ways after back-to-back Premier League defeats, according to BBC Sport, and Sky Sports reported that it lifted them to seventh in the league-phase table. ESPN’s match data showed City on nine points from four matches, with three wins and one defeat, while Leipzig remain on three points.
For Leipzig, it was a frustrating night. They matched City for long spells, created the better early chances and twice drew level, but could not hold on in the final 15 minutes.
City, captained by Haaland on the night, now turn their attention back to the Premier League, while Leipzig will look to recover in the Bundesliga.
The Champions League league phase continues later this month, with both clubs still in contention for a place in the knockout rounds.
Match details were confirmed by BBC Sport, Sky Sports, ESPN and the Bundesliga’s official website.
