SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA April 28, 2026 – Legendary actor Sam Neill has announced he is officially cancer-free after a five-year fight against a rare form of blood cancer, crediting groundbreaking medical science and expressing his readiness to return to the big screen.
In an exclusive interview with 7NEWS, the 78-year-old New Zealand-born star — best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise — shared the joyful update following his latest medical scan.
“I’ve just had a scan just now and there is no cancer in my body. That’s an extraordinary thing,” Neill said.
Diagnosed with lymphoma around 2022, Neill initially underwent chemotherapy, which kept the disease under control for a time. When the treatment stopped working, he faced a grim prognosis.
“It looked like I was on the way out, which wasn’t ideal obviously,” the actor recalled.
Neill became one of the first patients in Australia to receive a revolutionary CAR T-cell therapy — a cutting-edge treatment that genetically modifies a patient’s own blood cells to help the immune system target and destroy cancer. He has humorously referred to himself as “Patient Zero” or “Mr Zero” since undergoing the procedure.
“Thanks to science I am cancer free,” Neill stated.
Now in full remission, the actor is not only celebrating his recovery but actively advocating for wider access to CAR T-cell therapy in Australia, where the treatment can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars privately and remains limited for many patients.
Looking ahead with characteristic optimism, Neill declared: “It’s time I did another movie.”
Fans and fellow actors have flooded social media with congratulations, many tying the news to Neill’s iconic Jurassic Park legacy and sharing tributes featuring his character Dr. Alan Grant.
Neill’s openness about his health journey — while continuing to act, write, and manage his Two Paddocks vineyard in New Zealand — has inspired millions. His resilience highlights both personal strength and the life-changing potential of advanced cancer therapies.
This marks a triumphant new chapter for the veteran star, who has long said he fears retirement more than almost anything else.
Welcome back, Dr. Grant. The dinosaurs — and the world — await your return.❤️
