DOHA, QATAR May 2, 2026 – Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, received a telephone call from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday.
During the call, the Iranian Foreign Minister briefed the Qatari Prime Minister on the latest developments in ongoing negotiations and the current diplomatic activity surrounding them, according to an official statement from Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Sheikh Mohammed affirmed the State of Qatar’s full support for mediation efforts aimed at resolving the crisis through peaceful means. He stressed the need for all parties to respond positively to these efforts in order to create suitable conditions for progress in the negotiations and to reduce the risk of renewed escalation.
The Qatari leader also firmly emphasized that freedom of navigation is a well-established and non-negotiable principle. He warned that closing the Strait of Hormuz or using it as a bargaining chip would only exacerbate the crisis and jeopardize the vital interests of the region’s countries. Such actions, he noted, could have severe negative repercussions on global energy and food supplies, as well as on the stability of international markets and supply chains.
In this context, Sheikh Mohammed called for strict adherence to the provisions of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, while prioritizing the interests of the region and its people to strengthen regional and international security and stability and support de-escalation efforts.
The phone call comes amid ongoing diplomatic initiatives following the April 2026 ceasefire in the Iran conflict.
