WASHINGTON D.C. – May 1, 2026 – Just days after surviving what the White House has described as the third major assassination attempt against him in less than two years, President Donald Trump told Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy he is not concerned about his personal safety heading into future public events.
In a brief exchange captured on the White House lawn and shared widely on social media, Doocy asked the president: “This is going to be your first big public event since somebody tried to kill you on Saturday. Do you feel safe going to something like this?”
Trump replied without hesitation: “I don’t even think about it, Peter.”
The comment comes one week after chaos erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on April 25, 2026, at the Washington Hilton. Armed suspect Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, attempted to breach security at the crowded venue where President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and hundreds of journalists and officials were gathered.
According to federal authorities and court documents, Allen—described as a Caltech-educated tutor, computer engineer, and part-time game developer—arrived armed with a shotgun, handgun, multiple knives, and ammunition. He fired shots at a security checkpoint in the lobby before being tackled and arrested. No guests were seriously injured, though one Secret Service agent was reportedly struck in the vest.
Allen has been charged with one count of attempting to assassinate the president, along with transportation of a firearm with intent to commit a felony and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence. Prosecutors say he traveled to Washington, D.C., specifically targeting the event and Trump administration officials. A written manifesto recovered by investigators reportedly outlined his motives.
Trump was quickly evacuated from the stage by Secret Service agents and later addressed the incident, striking a characteristically resilient tone. In earlier remarks, he told reporters he felt “like a piñata” and referenced studying historical assassinations, saying impactful leaders are often targeted. “I hate to say it, but I’m honored by that,” he added in one exchange.
The April 25 incident has renewed scrutiny over security protocols at large Washington events. Attendees described inconsistent screening and overcrowded conditions that left high-profile guests vulnerable. World leaders and U.S. officials across party lines condemned the violence and expressed relief that no one was killed.
Despite the close call, Trump has continued his public schedule without pause, projecting confidence and refusing to let threats alter his movement. His latest remark to Doocy underscores a message he has repeated since previous attempts in Butler, Pennsylvania (July 2024) and West Palm Beach, Florida (September 2024): he will not be deterred.
As one White House official put it, the president views the danger as part of the job of delivering on his “America First” agenda. “We live in a crazy world,” Trump has said. “You can’t be so concerned that you can’t function.”
The FBI and Secret Service continue to investigate Allen’s background and any potential accomplices. He remains in federal custody pending further court proceedings.
