KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA January 22, 2026 Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh has pledged to enhance urban governance in Kuala Lumpur by incorporating community feedback, following a productive meeting with local residents’ associations focused on flood prevention and quality of life improvements.
In a media statement released today, Yeoh detailed her discussions with representatives from Save Kuala Lumpur (Save KL) and the Persatuan Kebajikan Kelestarian Komuniti Kuala Lumpur (KLRA+SD), which collectively represent over 80 residents’ associations across the city. The groups shared insights and suggestions on elevating living standards for Kuala Lumpur residents.
“I am committed to continuing meaningful engagement through ongoing discussions, consultation sessions, and collaboration with local communities and stakeholders,” Yeoh stated.
A key focus of the meeting was flood mitigation, including the protection and preservation of retention ponds, which play a crucial role in managing flooding in the capital. Yeoh highlighted her priorities in bolstering flood prevention measures and ensuring good governance practices. She also invited professionals and experts from the associations to contribute their views to support effective planning and implementation.
Yeoh emphasized her administration’s principle of governing alongside the people, noting that input from residents’ associations is vital in shaping decisions and urban management. “All feedback will be carefully examined to ensure every action taken truly benefits the residents,” she said. “This input will also guide the setting of priorities for future urban governance.”
The approach aligns with the MADANI government’s commitment to developing Kuala Lumpur with a focus on quality of life and public welfare, according to the statement.
This engagement comes amid ongoing concerns about urban flooding in Kuala Lumpur, where heavy rainfall has historically led to disruptions. By prioritizing community voices, Yeoh aims to foster more resilient and inclusive city planning.
