SINGAPORE April 22, 2026 – Malaysia is not a “small” player on the world stage. Its influence in shaping economic resilience, supply chains, and strategic investments is growing stronger, said Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Aziz, Chairman of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).
Speaking at the prestigious CNBC Converge Live 2026 forum in Singapore today, Tengku Zafrul shared Malaysia’s perspective on navigating global uncertainties. He emphasised MIDA’s critical role in attracting high-quality investments that support the nation’s economic goals.
In a panel discussion moderated by CNBC’s Morgan Brennan and alongside fellow panellist Carol Fong, Tengku Zafrul stressed the importance of a stronger ASEAN bloc.
“Malaysia and ASEAN as ‘middle powers’ are not just participants — but among those shaping the direction of regional supply chains for the future,” he said.
“A stronger ASEAN means a more resilient Asia.”
Tengku Zafrul made the remarks in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he wrote in Malay:
“Ramai cakap Malaysia kecil.
The comments come as Malaysia continues to position itself as a key investment destination in Southeast Asia under the MADANI framework, focusing on sustainable growth, technology, and resilient supply chains.
Tengku Zafrul currently serves as MIDA Chairman and President of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). He previously held senior cabinet positions, including Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry.
The CNBC Converge Live series brings together top policymakers, CEOs, and economists to discuss the future of business, technology, and geopolitics in Asia.
