TOKYO April 21, 2021 – The Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo has issued an urgent Earthquake/Tsunami Advisory urging Malaysian travellers and residents in Japan to remain vigilant after a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday.
According to the advisory shared by Wisma Putra (Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia) on its official X account, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning following the quake that hit at 1653 hours Japan Standard Time on 20 April 2026.
Malaysians currently in or travelling to the affected regions – particularly Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures – are strongly advised to:
- Stay vigilant at all times
- Strictly follow instructions issued by local Japanese authorities
- Avoid coastal and low-lying areas where tsunami waves could still pose a risk
