PARIS, July 4, 2025 – During an official visit to Paris, Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim took the opportunity to congratulate Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the Liberal Party’s recent victory in Canada’s general election.

In a posting on X, Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties with Canada across key strategic areas, including trade and investment, defense cooperation, clean energy, digital transformation, and emerging technologies.
Highlighting the robust energy partnership between the two nations, Anwar praised PETRONAS’ ongoing involvement in the LNG Canada project, describing it as a cornerstone of collaboration and a potential catalyst for green initiatives and future energy transitions.
As fellow members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Malaysia and Canada share a commitment to championing free, open, and inclusive multilateral trade principles. Anwar expressed optimism about finalizing the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement negotiations swiftly to unlock mutual economic benefits.
Anwar also urged Canada to reconsider its visa requirements for Malaysian citizens, aligning with the treatment extended to other Commonwealth nations, to foster stronger people-to-people ties and broader exchanges.
The Malaysian leader emphasized the importance of strengthening the ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership and invited Carney for an official visit to Malaysia in the near future to further cement the friendship between the two nations.
