TEHRAN July 28, 2026 — Iran has issued a stark warning to Ukraine following a Ukrainian long-range strike that hit an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea over the weekend, killing one sailor and injuring others.
In a statement circulating widely on social media, Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said: “Ukraine may soon also come to understand that Iran does not leave its actions unanswered.” Azizi added that any attack on Iran “always comes with a cost,” noting that the United States and Israel are already aware of this reality.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier condemned the incident as a “blatant violation of the United Nations Charter,” claiming it was carried out at Israel’s instigation in an attempt to drag Europe deeper into regional conflict. Tehran summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in protest and described the vessel as a commercial ship.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had announced that Ukrainian forces achieved “very strong results” with strikes in the Caspian Sea against vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship. Ukrainian officials maintain the targets were linked to the transfer of military supplies supporting Russia’s war effort.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha rejected Iran’s threats as “unjustified and groundless,” accusing Tehran of acting as a direct accomplice to Russian aggression by supplying weapons that have been used against Ukrainian cities since 2022.
The incident marks a rare direct clash between Iran and Ukraine, underscoring how the war in Ukraine continues to expand beyond its borders through supply routes connecting Russia and Iran across the Caspian Sea.
