GAZA STRIP May 3, 2026 – On the beaches of Gaza, a group of children orphaned by the ongoing conflict stood steadfast by the sea, waving Palestinian flags and holding signs that read “We are waiting for you,” as they sent a powerful message of resilience and hope. The moment was captured in a video produced by Waqf of Orphans and shared today by the Global Sumud Flotilla.
In the video, Ahmed Al-Najjar of Waqf Orphanage sits overlooking the Mediterranean, explaining how the international flotilla’s sails were expected to appear on the horizon, carrying essential humanitarian aid, clothes, and toys specifically for Gaza’s children. Instead, the mission was intercepted and blocked before it could reach Gaza’s shores.
“Under a siege that has never stopped, these children continue to endure loss, deprivation, and displacement,” Al-Najjar states in the footage. “Yet they refuse to let hope be taken from them. They hold on to Sumud – steadfastness, resilience, the will to remain.”
The children, many dressed in traditional attire and scarves, are seen waving Palestinian flags and signs while chanting messages of patience and anticipation. One young boy holds a sign with the Waqf of Orphans logo and smiles as he declares, “We are waiting for you… We love you, Palestine. Free Palestine.” The video ends with a unified call: “Let us hold on to Sumud. Let us meet in a free Palestine.”
The Global Sumud Flotilla – described as one of the largest civilian humanitarian missions to date, with dozens of vessels and hundreds of activists from over 70 countries – departed from European ports in April 2026 carrying aid intended to relieve the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, including supplies for orphans. Israeli forces intercepted at least 22 of the boats in international waters near the Greek island of Crete, more than 600 nautical miles from Gaza, detaining approximately 175 participants. Reports from organizers describe the boarding as violent, with some activists injured and communications jammed.
Despite the interception, the orphans’ message underscores the enduring spirit of Sumud among Gaza’s youngest and most vulnerable residents, who have faced years of blockade, displacement, and loss.
The Global Sumud Flotilla has vowed to continue its mission of solidarity and aid delivery until the siege on Gaza is lifted.
