BUKIT MERTAJAM, May 3 – The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has arrested a local man in his 30s for allegedly posting an image insulting His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor on a Facebook account named “Lucas Liam”.
In an official media statement issued at 10.30pm last night, PDRM’s Criminal Investigation Department Director, CP Datuk M. Kumar a/l S. Muthuvelu, confirmed that the arrest was carried out at 7.10pm on May 3, 2026, in Bukit Mertajam, Penang. The operation was jointly conducted by a team from Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department and Penang Contingent Police Headquarters, with close cooperation from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM).
Police seized two Samsung mobile phones together with the SIM cards believed to have been used to upload the offending post on May 2, 2026.
As of today, 12 police reports have been lodged nationwide regarding the same incident. An application for the suspect’s remand will be made tomorrow, May 4, 2026.
The case is being investigated by the Elite Criminal Investigation Unit, Prosecution/Law Division (D5), Bukit Aman under the following provisions:
- Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 – an act with a tendency to incite, punishable by a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or both.
- Section 504 of the Penal Code – intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, punishable by a fine or imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or both.
- Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 – improper use of network facilities or services, punishable by a fine not exceeding RM500,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.
PDRM stressed that any form of social media abuse touching on 3R sensitivities (Race, Religion and Royalty) could undermine societal harmony and national well-being.
“The public is advised to use these platforms with responsibility and accountability,” said CP Datuk M. Kumar. “PDRM is committed to taking appropriate action against any party found violating the law to ensure the security and safety of the nation remains protected.”
