WASHINGTON, D.C. May 4, 2026 (Life News Agency) – A chaotic officer-involved shooting erupted Monday afternoon on the National Mall near the White House, leaving a juvenile bystander wounded and an armed suspect hospitalized after Secret Service agents returned fire.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. ET at the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue SW, roughly half a mile from the White House and adjacent to the Washington Monument. According to the U.S. Secret Service, plainclothes agents first spotted a suspicious armed individual in the area. When uniformed officers approached to confront him, the suspect fled, drew a firearm, and opened fire.
One round struck a juvenile bystander, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is receiving treatment at a local hospital. Secret Service officers quickly returned fire, striking the suspect. He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
The White House was briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution while authorities secured the area. Officials confirmed there was no threat to President Donald Trump or the White House complex. The president was inside the residence at the time attending a small business event. A motorcade for Vice President JD Vance had passed through the vicinity earlier in the day.
Fox News captured video at the scene showing a suited official speaking behind yellow police tape as law enforcement continued their investigation. No further details on the suspect’s identity or motive have been released as the investigation remains ongoing.
The National Mall area was temporarily closed to the public. Road closures were put in place around the shooting scene.
This marks the latest security incident in the nation’s capital involving the Secret Service. Authorities have not indicated any connection to prior events.
Life News Agency will provide updates as more information becomes available from the Secret Service and D.C. police.
