LOS ANGELES, November 4, 2026 — Richard Madden and Gugu Mbatha-Raw will lead Trinity, a new political conspiracy thriller from Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio that premieres on December 1, Netflix shared on X.
The streamer released the first trailer and a set of first-look images alongside the date. According to the official logline, “a heroic naval officer’s newfound connection to the secretary of defense leads her to uncover a trail of secrets that may tie him to a global threat.”
Mbatha-Raw plays Commander Katherine Decker, second-in-command aboard the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine. Madden plays Webb Preston, the United States Secretary of Defense, a politician with a technology background whose ideas are seen as a threat in more ways than one, according to Netflix’s Tudum site.
“Saviour of world peace or its greatest threat”
Mercurio told Tudum that the series blends “high-octane action with a nail-biting conspiracy thriller”. As Decker grows closer to Preston, she is drawn into the machinations surrounding a top-secret programme code-named Trinity, and finds herself caught between backing his plan to prevent a third world war and exposing his hidden agenda.
“One line that sums up Commander Katherine Decker is ‘The boat comes first,'” Mercurio said, adding that she “comes to fear that the US secretary of defense is either the saviour of world peace or its greatest threat”.
The trailer opens aboard the submarine as Decker comes within seconds of launching a nuclear weapon at hostile contacts that then vanish from the radar, before the action moves to the Pentagon, entertainment site What’s on Netflix reported.
A Bodyguard reunion
The series reunites Madden with Mercurio, who created the 2018 BBC and Netflix hit Bodyguard, in which Madden starred as a police protection officer. Mercurio, also known for Line of Duty, is the showrunner, writer and an executive producer on Trinity, alongside Jimmy Mulville for Hat Trick Mercurio and Wendy Mericle. Michael Cuesta directed and executive produced the first two episodes.
The supporting cast includes Marcia Gay Harden as business matriarch Margaret Vandenburg, JD Pardo as US Navy Lieutenant Commander Tom Reyes, Bruce Greenwood as Special Agent Eric Colby, Robert Wisdom as Admiral Griff Tatum and James Remar as President Paul Barnard. Kirk Acevedo, Ben Cotton, Jason Ralph and Mark O’Brien also star.
Netflix ordered the series in June 2025, and filming took place in Vancouver, Canada, What’s on Netflix reported. Netflix says all seven episodes will be released together on December 1.
