JOHOR BAHRU, 13 Oct 2026 – Police are still waiting for official instructions and a decision from the Johor State Prosecution Director’s Office to charge the suspect in the murder of Form Four student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal.
Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the investigation paper was referred to the office on 9 October for further action. He added that the paper remains under review as the suspect is a juvenile offender.
“The suspect in this case is a juvenile offender and the matter requires more careful consideration by the Johor State Prosecution Director,” he told a media conference after the Monthly Assembly of the Johor Contingent here today.
He said the suspect’s remand period is still ongoing and will end this Friday. Ab Rahaman expressed hope that the official instruction or decision from the Johor State Prosecution Director’s Office would be received before the remand expires.
Police previously believed the motive behind the killing of the 16-year-old student involved revenge, including related to a rejected romantic advance.
Irene Sofiya was found unconscious and covered in blood in the school hall in Yong Peng, Batu Pahat, at about 5 pm on 3 October before being confirmed dead. A 16-year-old male suspect was subsequently remanded for six days on 4 October to assist investigations, with the remand later extended for another six days until this Friday.
