KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), through the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), has launched two new initiatives to strengthen intellectual property-backed financing.

The initiatives are the Intellectual Property Valuation Financing Fund, with a RM1 million pilot allocation, and Malaysia’s first Intellectual Property Valuation Module.
Both initiatives were launched in conjunction with the 2026 National Intellectual Property Commercialisation Conference and Exhibition (IP CONFEX 2026) at the World Trade Centre (WTC) Kuala Lumpur, which began yesterday and runs for two days.
IP CONFEX 2026 brings together more than 500 participants, including industry players, financial institutions, researchers, innovators and government agencies, to strengthen the country’s intellectual property valuation, financing and commercialisation ecosystem.
The Intellectual Property Valuation Financing Fund is aimed at helping selected local companies cover the cost of professional intellectual property valuation services.
Through systematic and recognised valuation, a company’s intangible assets, including intellectual property, can be formally assessed to support banking financing, licensing and investment activities.
The initiative is particularly beneficial to technology-based startups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with valuable intellectual property assets but facing difficulties securing financing due to a lack of traditional physical collateral.
Meanwhile, the Intellectual Property Valuation Module was introduced as a basis for developing more uniform valuation standards, as well as supporting the development of qualified and regulated local intellectual property valuation professionals.
KPDN said the two initiatives complement each other in developing a more structured intellectual property-backed financing ecosystem.
The fund helps companies obtain valuation services, while the module strengthens capacity, expertise and standards in the implementation of the valuation process.
The move is in line with the aspirations of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which, among others, identifies innovation and intellectual property commercialisation as key drivers of new economic growth.
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the value of global intangible assets increased 13-fold over 25 years to US$80 trillion.
More than 90 per cent of the value of leading companies listed on the S&P 500 is now supported by intangible assets, including intellectual property.
KPDN said the initiatives also support MyIPO’s five-year strategic transformation plan, MyIPO NEXTGEN 2025-2030, which focuses on positioning intellectual property as a strategic asset to drive economic growth, rather than merely as a legal protection instrument.
IP CONFEX 2026 also witnessed the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between MyIPO and WIPO, Multimedia University (MMU), Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), National Entrepreneurship Institute (INSKEN), Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PERNAS), as well as the Motorcycle and Scooter Assemblers and Distributors Association of Malaysia (MASAAM).
The collaborations aim to strengthen MyIPO’s network with international and local organisations, educational institutions, trade and entrepreneurship development agencies, as well as industry players.
They also cover expertise sharing, capacity building and efforts to expand the commercialisation of local intellectual property.
KPDN said the launch of the two initiatives and the strategic collaborations reflected the ministry and MyIPO’s continued commitment to positioning intellectual property as a driver of commercialisation, financing and economic growth.
