VERSAILLES, FRANCE June 17, 2026 — U.S. President Donald Trump physically signed a hard copy of the 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Iran on Wednesday evening, formalizing an extended ceasefire aimed at ending months of conflict in the region. The signing took place at the Palace of Versailles during a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron following the G7 summit.
Trump was captured on video saying, “THIS WAS NOT EASY… THAT I can tell you,” as he reviewed and signed the documents at a formal table with officials present. He later told reporters as he departed the palace, “It’s signed. I signed it in Versailles.” Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also signed the agreement, according to reports and images from Iranian state media.
The MoU, which builds on a digital signing earlier in the week, establishes a 60-day ceasefire (extendable by mutual consent) across all fronts, including Lebanon. Key provisions include:
- Reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping without tolls.
- Performance-based sanctions relief and lifting of the U.S. naval blockade.
- Performance-based sanctions relief for Iran.
- Commitments to negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program, reconstruction, and other issues.
- Iran’s pledge not to pursue nuclear weapons, with IAEA oversight.
A White House official confirmed the agreement is now in effect. The deal follows a war that began in late February 2026 with U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, resulting in significant casualties on multiple sides.
Trump has described the agreement as a major achievement but cautioned that the U.S. could resume military action if Iran fails to comply. Critics in both countries have raised concerns, with some calling it insufficient or a form of capitulation.
The G7 summit in France also addressed related regional issues, including sanctions on Russia. Oil prices have fallen on expectations of increased supply through the reopened strait.
Further talks are expected in the coming weeks to pursue a more permanent resolution.
