Formula 1 has revisited one of the standout moments from the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, with the official account sharing footage of Max Verstappen’s brilliant pass on Lewis Hamilton and labelling it a “classic” Crypto.com Bold Move.
The four-time world champion executed a late-braking dive into Turn 1 on lap 16 at the Hungaroring. After Ferrari’s undercut strategy briefly put Hamilton ahead following the first round of pit stops, Verstappen closed rapidly, passed Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson, and then swept around the inside of Hamilton to reclaim the position in one decisive move. Onboard and external angles show Verstappen carrying significantly higher speed (around 283 km/h) compared to the cars ahead as he committed to the overtake.
“I saw the opportunity. It was my only one. I just went for it. We’re good on the brakes, so that helped, but it was all under control,” Verstappen said after the race.
The move proved pivotal. Verstappen went on to finish second behind race winner Lando Norris (McLaren), with Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) third. Hamilton, who received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, ended fifth behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.
The Hungaroring is notoriously difficult for overtaking, making Verstappen’s surprise attack especially impressive. Fans and commentators quickly dubbed it a contender for overtake of the year, and F1’s decision to resurface the clip more than a week after the July 26 race has reignited discussion about one of the 2026 season’s most memorable moments.
