KUALA LUMPUR June 14, 2026 — Barisan Nasional (BN) is preparing to contest the upcoming Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections independently, with its chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressing confidence in the coalition’s “unity and sincerity” to deliver strong results for the people.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) early Sunday, Zahid — who is also Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister and UMNO president — said BN is ready to face the polls.
“Insya-Allah. We are preparing to contest the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections together,” he wrote. “I am confident that with the unity and sincerity of this BN team, our efforts will be translated into something good in the eyes of the people. May all matters be made easier by Him.”
The post was accompanied by a photo of a formal BN strategy meeting, showing leaders in blue uniforms gathered around a conference table.
The Election Commission (EC) has set:
- Johor: Polling day on July 11, 2026 (nomination on June 27, early voting on July 7).
- Negeri Sembilan: Polling day on August 1, 2026 (nomination on July 18, early voting on July 28).
Both state assemblies were dissolved in early June, triggering snap polls. Johor has 56 seats, while Negeri Sembilan has 36.
These elections mark a notable test for the federal unity government, as BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) — allies at the national level — will compete against each other in both states. BN has opted to go it alone in Johor and is expected to do the same in Negeri Sembilan amid local tensions.
Zahid has previously positioned the Johor polls as a potential launchpad for a broader “blue wave” comeback for BN. In Negeri Sembilan, internal issues including a palace-related controversy earlier this year added complexity to the political landscape.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged all contesting parties to adhere to campaigning rules and maintain ethical conduct during the polls.
BN leaders from both states have briefed the coalition’s central leadership on their preparations. Candidates for Johor are expected to be finalised soon, with Zahid indicating the list could be announced about a week before nomination day.
The staggered polling dates have drawn some criticism over logistics, but EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun defended the schedule due to preparation needs following the surprise dissolutions.
These state polls are widely seen as a litmus test ahead of the next general election, due by February 2028.
