KYIV April 30, 2026 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has directed his representatives to contact the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump for detailed information on Russia’s latest proposal for a short-term ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.
In a statement posted on X, Zelenskyy expressed Ukraine’s commitment to genuine peace while voicing caution about the Russian initiative. “I have instructed our representatives to contact the team of the President of the United States and clarify the details of Russia’s proposal for a short-term ceasefire,” he wrote. “Ukraine seeks peace and is doing the necessary diplomatic work to bring this war to a real end. We will clarify what exactly this is about – a few hours of security for a parade in Moscow, or something more.”
The Russian proposal emerged from a recent phone call between President Vladimir Putin and President Trump, during which Putin reportedly indicated willingness for a temporary truce timed to coincide with Russia’s Victory Day commemorations on May 9. Moscow has scaled back its traditional military parade this year amid heightened security concerns.
Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s firm position on any potential agreement: “Our proposal is a long-term ceasefire, reliable and guaranteed security for people, and a lasting peace. Ukraine is ready to work toward this in any dignified and effective format.”
The move comes as broader peace negotiations remain stalled, despite occasional suggestions from both sides for holiday-related truces in the past. Ukrainian officials have consistently stressed that any ceasefire must include strong, enforceable security guarantees to prevent a return to hostilities and to protect civilians.
No immediate response has been issued by the U.S. or Russian sides following Zelenskyy’s announcement. The situation continues to develop amid international calls for a sustainable resolution to the conflict.
