WASHINGTON D.C. April 28, 2026 – The White House announced Tuesday the launch of a new limited-edition U.S. passport designed by the State Department to celebrate America’s semiquincentennial – the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.
Titled the “Patriot Passport,“ the commemorative document features President Donald J. Trump’s official portrait and gold-embossed signature prominently displayed on the inside cover, superimposed over stylized text from the Declaration of Independence against an American flag motif. Additional pages include historical imagery, such as John Trumbull’s famous painting Declaration of Independence, depicting the signing of the nation’s founding document.

The White House made the announcement via X (formerly Twitter) with the post: “Patriot passport unlocked. 🦅 Limited edition. Stamped for America 250.” accompanied by images of the new design.
A State Department spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, confirmed the details in a statement: “As the United States celebrates America’s 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed U.S. passports to commemorate this historic occasion. These passports will feature customized artwork and enhanced imagery while maintaining the same security features that make the U.S. passport the most secure document in the world.”
The passports are expected to begin issuance this summer on a limited, first-come, first-served basis. Applicants requesting a new or renewed passport at the Washington Passport Agency may receive the commemorative version, pending availability. Standard passport designs will remain an option for those who prefer them.
This marks the first time a sitting president’s image has appeared in an official U.S. passport. The move is part of broader efforts across federal agencies to commemorate America 250, including special national park passes and commemorative coins featuring presidential imagery.
The announcement has sparked widespread discussion online, with supporters hailing it as a patriotic collector’s item and critics calling it an unusual personalization of a government travel document.
The limited-edition passports are valid for the standard 10-year period and retain all necessary security features for international travel. Full rollout details, including exact quantities and availability windows, are expected to be released by the State Department in the coming weeks.
