PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA March 24, 2026 – Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has firmly reiterated Malaysia’s condemnation of the recent military strike on Iran, stressing the need for adherence to international law and an immediate return to diplomacy.
In a statement posted on X today, Anwar revealed details of his telephone conversation with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. The two leaders discussed recent developments in West Asia (the Middle East) and their far-reaching implications for global security and economic stability.
“I reaffirmed Malaysia’s position which strongly condemns the military attack against Iran, and rejects any unilateral actions that contradict international law,” Anwar said. He added that Malaysia continues to call for an immediate ceasefire, protection of civilians, and for all parties to return to the negotiating table through diplomatic channels.
The discussion also touched on the conflict’s impact on New Zealand’s energy sector, including rising fuel prices and added pressure on the domestic economy. Anwar welcomed New Zealand’s proactive measures to strengthen energy security and accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties under the existing Strategic Partnership framework, particularly in trade, investment and energy cooperation.
The phone call underscores Malaysia’s active diplomatic engagement amid ongoing global tensions. Anwar’s office illustrated the conversation with an official photograph showing him at his desk in Putrajaya, engaged in the call, with Luxon’s portrait superimposed on the image.
