KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA Oct 27, 2025 – Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Monday underscored more than three decades of exemplary cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Republic of Korea (ROK) as the ASEAN-ROK Summit commenced alongside the 47th ASEAN Summit.
In his opening address, Anwar described the ASEAN-ROK Dialogue as a benchmark for partnerships grounded in mutual trust, respect, and shared prosperity. “For over three decades, the ASEAN–Republic of Korea Dialogue has been a model of cooperation built on trust, mutual respect, and shared benefit,” he stated.
The gathering marks a milestone in bilateral relations, which Anwar noted have advanced to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This evolution, he said, signifies “deep confidence and strong ties between both sides.”
The summit unfolds against a backdrop of global headwinds, including technological disruptions, intensifying strategic rivalries, fractured supply chains, and mounting strains on the multilateral trading system. Yet, Anwar emphasized that ASEAN and the ROK remain aligned in their conviction that progress demands a spirit of collaboration and mutual reliance.
Adding significance to the event is the debut participation of ROK President Lee Jae-myung, whose presence as a key ASEAN interlocutor is expected to bolster strategic ties and cooperation across diverse sectors between Seoul and its Southeast Asian partners.
Anwar’s remarks set a collaborative tone for discussions aimed at navigating these challenges through enhanced dialogue and joint initiatives. The two-day summit continues with sessions on economic resilience, digital transformation, and regional security.
