KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept 7, 2025 – The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) expressed its heartfelt gratitude to media representatives who attended the PETRA Media Night 2025 engagement session held in Kuala Lumpur last night (7 September 2025).

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof, lauded the media’s significant role as a strategic partner of the government. He emphasized the media’s critical function in communicating the government’s initiatives to the public, fostering stronger ties and collaboration between PETRA and media stakeholders through such engagements.

During the session, Fadillah shared updates on developments in the energy and water sectors under PETRA’s purview. A key highlight was the ongoing study into nuclear energy as a potential new energy source, with possible implementation projected within the next 10 to 15 years. MyPower, an agency under PETRA, is currently conducting detailed assessments covering policy, legislation, technical and commercial feasibility, industry direction, public engagement, and ensuring sufficient technology and human resources.

Fadillah also referenced the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Ministers’ Meeting in Busan, South Korea, where regional countries, including Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, agreed to explore nuclear energy as a future clean energy source. The meeting recognized nuclear energy as a viable option for APEC nations to secure a sustainable energy supply.
To support Malaysia’s economic growth, particularly in energy-intensive digital industries such as artificial intelligence (AI) and data centers, the government is considering nuclear energy to ensure a reliable energy supply. Fadillah noted that second- and third-generation nuclear power plants have seen significant advancements in technology, safety, environmental impact, and global public acceptance.
On the water sector, PETRA remains committed to achieving the objectives of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) under the Water Transformation Roadmap 2040 (AIR 2040), aligned with the Malaysia MADANI framework.
