TAMPA May 3, 2026 — U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces launched support for Project Freedom today, providing military protection to merchant vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz in a major operation directed by the President.
The mission aims to restore freedom of navigation through the vital international waterway, which carries roughly one-quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade as well as significant volumes of fuel and fertilizer products essential to global supply chains.
“Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy as we also maintain the naval blockade,” said Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander.
The operation follows announcement by the U.S. Department of State of a new Maritime Freedom Construct — a joint initiative with the Department of War — to improve coordination and information sharing among international partners for maritime security in the Strait.
U.S. military assets committed to Project Freedom include:
- Guided-missile destroyers
- More than 100 land- and sea-based aircraft
- Multi-domain unmanned platforms
- Approximately 15,000 American service members
The move comes amid ongoing regional tensions following the 2026 Iran conflict and persistent disruptions to commercial shipping. CENTCOM emphasized that the operation is strictly defensive in nature while the naval blockade on Iran remains in effect.
Project Freedom marks a significant escalation in U.S. efforts to safeguard critical sea lanes and stabilize global energy markets. Life News Agency will continue monitoring developments as the operation unfolds.
