President says he is concerned after a researcher dies and nearly 200 contacts are monitored, while Moscow disputes a confirmed leak.
WASHINGTON D.C Oct 5, 2026 – President Trump says the United States is concerned about a suspected plague case in Siberia and is prepared to help Russia after a laboratory worker’s death.
Trump told reporters outside the White House on Monday that he is worried about the incident, describing the illness as a “rough disease” and a “big problem.” He noted that germs and microbes have become stronger over time and that treatments once effective against pneumonia no longer work as well. “We’ll help them as much as we can,” he said, adding that Washington had only recently learned of the situation and had not yet spoken with President Vladimir Putin.
The case centers on a 28-year-old laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East in Shelekhov. She died last week after developing severe pneumonia. Local reports, citing sources close to regional security services, said she may have been exposed after a test tube broke at the facility. Russia’s public health agency, Rospotrebnadzor, has disputed a confirmed plague diagnosis, stating she had pneumonia of unknown origin and that the situation remains under control. Nearly 200 contacts have been placed under medical observation.
U.S. officials said the administration is monitoring developments and assessing options. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the case as cause for focus rather than immediate alarm, citing limited travel between the countries. The World Health Organization has assessed the risk to the general public as low while the cause of death remains unconfirmed by Russian authorities.
The episode has drawn attention in Washington amid ongoing questions over laboratory biosafety and the handling of high-risk pathogens.
