WASHINGTON D.C Aug 19, 2026 – President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced what he called the “most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,” labeling the campaign an “ECONOMIC D-DAY” aimed at isolating Iran.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said Iran had failed to seize the opportunity for a deal despite what he described as the greatest chance he had offered the Islamic Republic. “Therefore, today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale,” he wrote.
Trump claimed U.S. military actions had already severely degraded Iran’s capabilities: “Their navy is gone, their air force is destroyed, their military factories are now rubble, their currency is worthless, and their country is hanging by a thread.”
He further warned that any nation allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide a “lifeline” to Iran would face “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences.” Trump specifically targeted oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies, stating: “It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are.”
The president called on U.S. allies to join the effort “to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat,” adding that the measures would “cripple” Iran’s ability to project influence and reaffirming that “IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON.”
The announcement comes amid a conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran that began in late February 2026 and has lasted nearly six months. Diplomatic talks have repeatedly stalled, with Trump recently signaling both openness to and disinterest in further negotiations depending on the day.
It also follows the United Arab Emirates’ decision earlier Wednesday to suspend all trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran indefinitely. The UAE cited regional escalations, including the detection of two ballistic missiles it attributed to Iran that fell into the sea near its territory. Iran denied launching the missiles.
Trump’s post did not provide detailed new mechanisms beyond intensified secondary pressure, building on existing U.S. efforts such as Operation Economic Fury launched earlier in the year. The statement was widely shared, including by accounts monitoring BRICS-related and geopolitical developments.
