PUTRAJAYA, May 6, 2026 – Malaysia’s Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has called for the immediate fast-tracking of the Remote Sensor Site (RSS) project on Pulau Malawali in Sabah, describing it as a critical priority to close surveillance blind spots and strengthen the country’s maritime defence.
Speaking at the Home Ministry (KDN) Monthly Assembly on May 4, Saifuddin stressed that the long-range sensor and radar facility is essential for enhancing real-time detection of threats along Sabah’s eastern coastline and northern waters.
“The key point is that the radar on Pulau Malawali must be expedited in its construction,” he said. “In that way, we can enhance our capability to control our security areas, particularly on the east coast of Sabah. This is a priority. If completed on schedule, there will be no more blind spots in the area.”
The project forms part of the Sea Surveillance System (Swasla) and has been allocated RM88 million under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) as a priority initiative. Once operational, the Pulau Malawali RSS will complement the existing Balambangan RSS, providing full coverage of northern Sabah’s maritime zone, which currently stands at only about 70 per cent.
A video clip of the minister’s remarks, shared widely on social media by security-focused accounts including @GengKNegara, highlights the urgency. The post’s caption reads: “Projek ini penting sebagai langkah proaktif memperkukuh pertahanan maritim negara” (This project is important as a proactive step to strengthen the country’s maritime defence).
Security analysts note that the facility will significantly improve Malaysia’s ability to monitor and respond to cross-border threats, including smuggling, illegal immigration, and potential incursions in one of the nation’s most strategically sensitive maritime regions.
The Home Ministry has indicated that any further delays could compromise national security, and officials are now working to ensure the project stays on track.
Life News Agency will continue to monitor developments on this key national security initiative.
