KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 2026— Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his gratitude to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah for gifts and prayers received on the occasion of his 79th birthday and amid his recovery from recent surgery.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday morning, Anwar wrote in Malay: “Menjunjung kasih KDYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong dan KDYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong atas kurniaan dan ingatan sempena ulang tahun kelahiran, serta doa buat kesembuhan dan keafiatan saya. Dirgahayu Tuanku!”
(Translation: “I express my deepest gratitude to His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Her Majesty the Raja Permaisuri Agong for the gifts and remembrance on the occasion of my birthday, as well as prayers for my recovery and well-being. Long live Your Majesty!”)
The post included two photographs of floral arrangements. In one, Anwar, wearing a hospital gown, is seen smiling and giving a thumbs-up beside a large mixed bouquet featuring hydrangeas, lilies, orchids and other flowers. The accompanying card reads: “Happy Birthday Dato’ Get well soon From: His Majesty The Sultan Of Johor.”
The second image shows a prominent arrangement of bright purple phalaenopsis orchids with a card addressed to “Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” wishing “Semoga Segera Sembuh” (Get well soon), from both the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and the Raja Permaisuri Agong.
Anwar, who was born on August 10, 1947, turned 79 on Monday. On the same day, his medical team announced that he had successfully undergone elective laparoscopic surgery to treat a para-umbilical hernia. The procedure was carried out smoothly under specialist care. He is currently undergoing physiotherapy and remains under medical supervision to ensure a smooth recovery.
The surgery coincided with a special parliamentary sitting to debate the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Tabung Haji. Anwar’s office indicated he would follow the proceedings closely while recovering and had apologised for being unable to attend in person.
The gestures from the royal couple highlight the personal well-wishes extended to the Prime Minister during his hospital stay and birthday.
