WASHINGTON D.C. June 19, 2026 — President Donald Trump on Friday descended the stairs of the United States’ newest presidential aircraft — a modified Boeing 747-8 donated by the government of Qatar — during an unveiling ceremony inside a hangar at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
The aircraft, designated as the VC-25B “Bridge” plane, serves as an interim replacement for the aging VC-25A fleet that has served as Air Force One since 1990. It features a new red, white, dark blue, and gold livery selected by Trump, along with upgraded secure communications, self-defense systems, and other presidential modifications completed by L3Harris Technologies.
Trump, dressed in a blue suit, was greeted by saluting U.S. service members as he stepped off the plane. The event highlighted the jumbo jet’s size — described by Trump as “virtually double” that of previous models — and its role in bridging delays in Boeing’s production of two permanent VC-25B replacements, now expected around 2028.
The plane was formally gifted to the U.S. last year and accepted after legal reviews. Qatar’s donation, valued at approximately $400 million before modifications, has sparked debate over ethics, the emoluments clause, and foreign influence. Trump has previously stated the aircraft will eventually be transferred to his future presidential library.
The unveiling comes amid the retirement of one longtime VC-25A, with the new jet helping ease maintenance burdens on the remaining fleet. Officials described it as a symbol of American strength, though some critics have questioned the foreign gift and associated taxpayer costs for conversion.
This marks a significant update to presidential air transport, addressing long-standing delays in the Air Force One replacement program while providing enhanced capabilities for the commander-in-chief.
