PENANG April 25, 2026 – The open field in Permatang Pasir transformed into a vibrant “panggung terbuka” (open stage) last night as more than 200 local residents gathered for a nostalgic open-air movie screening, locally known as wayang pacak.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who joined the community event, described the atmosphere as lively and filled with laughter. Families and residents relaxed on mats, enjoying the screening under the night sky.
The programme was organised under the JAGO initiative by the Department of Information Malaysia (JAPEN), an effort aimed at bringing entertainment closer to the people while strengthening community bonds.
Adding excitement to the evening, lead actors from the Malaysian film Babah – Qi Razali and Cristina Suzanne – made a special appearance to meet and interact directly with residents.
“Inisiatif JAGO oleh JAPEN memang padu, bawa hiburan dekat dengan komuniti sambil eratkan kebersamaan,” Fahmi posted on X (formerly Twitter), tagging the hashtags #MADANIBekerja and #YakinMADANI.
The event is part of the MADANI government’s ongoing push to promote local culture and foster closer ties between the administration and the rakyat through accessible, grassroots entertainment programmes.
Photos and videos shared by the minister showed Fahmi mingling with families, children, and film stars amid the cheerful crowd, capturing the warm, festive spirit of the night.
This wayang pacak screening revives a classic Malaysian tradition, offering affordable family entertainment while supporting local film talent.
