RIYADH Sept 16, 2026 — Saudi air defense forces intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement south of Mecca on Tuesday evening, before it could enter prohibited airspace over the holy city, the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said.
Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki said Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces brought down the unmanned aircraft at about 6:50 p.m. local time on Sept. 15. He described the incident as a “hostile and terrorist attempt” and the second reported effort to target Mecca after a ballistic missile launch on July 27, 2017.
“Such an act can only be described as a disgraceful attempt targeting the site of revelation, the qibla of Muslims, and the place cherished by millions of Muslims worldwide, aimed at terrifying peaceful worshipers, pilgrims, citizens, and residents,” al-Malki said in a statement posted on X. He added that the security of the Two Holy Mosques and “the guests of the Most Merciful is a red line” and that the coalition “will not hesitate to take all necessary and deterrent measures.”
The announcement came after Saudi authorities issued and later lifted emergency alerts in Mecca, Jeddah, and Taif. Civil Defense said the danger in Mecca had passed and urged people to avoid crowds and filming. Officials said it was the first such alert in the holy city during the latest round of fighting.
The drone incident followed a series of Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi cities and military sites. On Monday, strikes on Khamis Mushayt, Abha, and Taif wounded 13 civilians and damaged homes and vehicles, according to the coalition. The Houthis have claimed large-scale attacks on Saudi air bases as retaliation for airstrikes in Yemen.
Fighting inside Yemen has also intensified. Houthi forces have advanced along the Red Sea coast, including the capture of the port of Mokha, while both sides report civilian casualties from cross-border and in-country strikes. Iran-backed Houthis control large parts of Yemen and have repeatedly used drones and missiles against Saudi territory since the civil war escalated.
The coalition’s account of the Mecca drone has not been independently verified. There was no immediate public comment from the Houthis on this specific incident. The 2017 missile, which Saudi forces said they intercepted in Taif province tens of kilometers from Mecca, was also disputed at the time; the Houthis said they had aimed at a military air base rather than the holy city.
Mecca houses the Grand Mosque and the Kaaba, toward which Muslims worldwide pray. Any threat near the site carries heavy religious and political weight in a conflict that has already drawn in regional powers and disrupted Red Sea shipping.
